For a holy cause to die it's easy ...

Podgora / Piedimonte
Via IV Novembre, 32

Ljubka Šorli’s husband Lojze Bratuž was persecuted by fascists for his unwavering patriotism and was imprisoned several times. On 27 December 1936, after the mass in Podgora, where his choir sang Slovenian songs, fascists forced him to drink machine oil mixed with petrol. He died in excruciating pain on 16 February 1937. On 18 February people spontaneously gathered from far and wide for his funeral, so the authorities, fearing that riots could break out, moved the funeral to the next morning. The funeral took place under police supervision in the closest family circle.

Tožba umirajočega

(Svojemu možu ob 17. obletnici smrti)

V okna veter se težak zaganja.
Oh, kako nocoj je dolga noč …
Modra luč po stenah sence riše,
v me zajeda smrtna se nemoč.

»Monotono pojejo kraguljčki …«
Pesem moja … Ali slišim prav?
Moji fantje, moji dobri fantje
zadnji mi pošiljajo pozdrav.

Ni za sveto stvar težko umreti,
a še mnogo, mnogo dal bi rad …
V grob s seboj po sili hudobije
neizrabljen nesel bom zaklad.
