Zofka Kveder

22. 4. 1878 – 21. 11. 1926
Writer, playwright, translator, publicist, and cultural mediator Zofka Kveder was first associated with Gorizia through her publisher Andrej Gabršček, who owned a bookstore in the Trgovski Dom (House of Commerce) building. Gorizia features in her novel Gabrijela, where Kveder describes a meeting between the first-person narrator with her school friend in a park next to Trgovski Dom.

Her correspondence tells us that she liked to come to Gorizia later in life as well, also to visit her friend, lawyer and social democrat Anton Dermota. On 24 January 1910 she held a notable lecture in Gorizia, of which the newspaper Rdeči prapor (Red Banner) reported: “Yesterday, on the 24th, author Zofka Kveder Jelovšek held a remarkable lecture on feminism. She spoke most calmly – as she said – without aspirations. And she was more than successful. She offered a brief overview of how the view of women and their role in social and individual life has changed through history. The most interesting – and the most relevant – was the part where she discussed the woman of the new, modern time. The listeners, too, left little to be desired, for they came in extraordinary numbers: there had never been a Slovenian lecture in Gorizia attended by such a crowd before! They listened attentively, too, and this is something that deserves special acknowledgement in Gorizia. This was the first public lecture organized by the Slov. work. education society in Gorizia. This first occasion already gave us an experience to remember. The lecture took place on Slovenian premises, but in the hall of the ali’angelo d’oro hotel.”

This lecture continued to resonate after WWI, as evident from Zofka Kveder’s portrayal in Slovenka: “I remember her from when I was young. She gave a lecture one night at the hall of “At the Golden Angel’s” in Gorizia. Every intelligent man and woman was there to hear what she had to say. (Slovenka 1923, no. 2, p. 27).
